Day 8: A Free Day in Cusco

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

We woke up about 6 but didn't get out of bed. The remote was still on Ryan's chest from when he fell asleep changing channels the night before. We watched some US sitcoms and went downstairs for breakfast around 8ish. We ate and stayed and had more tea with Tom and Sylgie until I saw the computer free. I had a chance to check my email, write to my mom and sister, and Ryan logged onto his fantasy football to change his line-up. We checked the weather in Puerto Maldonado, 85-90 and humid, tried to find reviews on good places to buy alpaca goods in Cusco, and headed back up to our room. We changed and got ready and walked over to the Plaza d'Armas where something was going on because no cars were allowed to drive in the square. A woman tried to get a donation from me for a ribbon, but we escaped to the other side of the square and saw a female dog in heat and a bunch of other stray dogs were following the poor thing around.

We walked to a bunch of shops looking for things to buy, and ended up at Paddy's Irish Pub for lunch. It's apparently the highest Irish owned pub int he world at 11,000 some feet. I had some shephard's pie and Ryan had a cheeseburger and 2 beers and our bill was only 40 soles! After lunch and some watching the Chelsea/Arsenal soccer game, we headed out with a mission to buy some Christmas presents! We bought almost everything at one store, and we went back to one other store were Ryan bought himself a baby alpaca blanket. We were pretty much done so we brought our purchases back to the hotel, watched the end of The Fast and the Furious, and fell asleep as Mission Impossible started.

When I woke up Ryan had already unwrapped his blanket and we dozed/watched TV under it for awhile. Ryan took a shower and I caught up journaling before our jungle briefing at 6:30. A guy named Danny met us, he wasn't from GAP but works for the lodge we'll be staying at and explained more about the next few days. Then Tom, Sylgie, Jill, and Franzisca met us and we went to a place called Jack's Cafe to meet a guy from San Fransisco that Jill met rafting that afternoon. I guess we didn't decide to eat there because we ended up back at Paddy's Irish Pub. It was pretty crowded up be pulled some stolls up to a table and fit us all. This time Ryan and I shared a toasty, basically a grilled ham and cheese, and had a cusquena as well. We were tired and our stomachs were a bit rumbly so we left early with Tom and Sylgie. Back at the hotel they gave us some packages of cookies (they'd call them biscuits) and we said goodbye. We got ready for bed, I saw the end of an episode of Grey's Anatomy, and feel asleep to Desperate Housewives and Ryan snoring.
